With Trembling Bells, folk music is made from what is raging in the belly. A little like the folk scene at the end of the sixties. It’s indeed a kind of tradition so dear to Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Incredible String Band that the Scots create their music. Led by drummer singer Alex Neilson and soprano Lavinia Blackwall, Trembling Bells are, however, nothing like their peers. Because to the heritage of previously mentioned elders, they add a bombastic progressive rock, psychiatric blues a-la Captain Beefheart and even indie poetry in the same vein as PJ Harvey! A sort of fascinating schizophrenia supported by a real writing talent. Most importantly an electroshock akin to a great mass for those who only see folk as a monolithic music style. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
