When it comes to brothers, we can hardly speak of "reunions". Especially since Lionel and Stéphane Belmondo have been regularly meeting in the studio to commit their conversations to wax, record snapshots of their lives... Their Belmondo Quintet, which they founded in 1993 is one of the gleaming cadillacs of French jazz. It's a kind of endearing club that brings to life the traditions of cool jazz, post bop and hard bop. They bring virtuosity and a thousand influences to bear on their subject matter. With the impeccable Éric Legnini on piano, Sylvain Romano on double bass and Tony Rabeson on drums, the trumpeter and saxophonist have brought forth Brotherhood, their fifth work, recorded in January 2020, consisting wholly of original compositions, some of which are dedicated to past giants who influenced the group's philosophy: to Wayne Shorter, Wayne's Words, Yusef's Tree is dedicated to Yusef Lateef, Letters to Evans to Bill Evans and Woody ‘n Us to Woody Shaw. Two other compositions by Lionel celebrate the French tradition of religious organ music (Doxologie and Sirius), highlighting the breadth of the spectrum of influences that nourish their art (in 2003, their Hymne au Soleil shone an original light on the music of Lili Boulanger and Maurice Duruflé). This superb velvety album closes with Song for Dad, a touching ballad dedicated to their father and first mentor Yvan, who died in 2019. The grace, simplicity, precision and sheer beauty of the latter's theme mirror the record as a whole. It should be noted that Brotherhood marks a resurgence for B Flat Recordings, the label that Stéphane and Lionel created in 2003 and which had been dormant since 2011... © Marc Zisman / Qobuz
