Astor Piazzolla was such a towering figure that it has been tough for followers to expand on his accomplishment. Some have explored the affinities between tango and jazz, but here, bandoneon player JP Jofre and clarinetist Seunghee Lee go in a different direction, with intriguing results enjoyable enough to garner a Best Compendium Grammy nomination in 2022. The key is that although Piazzolla and Heitor Villa-Lobos are present in orchestral arrangements (that of the Aria from Villa-Lobos' Bachiana Brasileiras No. 5 is especially nice), the music is otherwise newly composed by Jofre. (JP Jofre and composer Juan Pablo Jofre Romarion are one and the same.) He offers pieces in a variety of modes, written expressly for the duo of clarinet and bandoneon, with an orchestral double concerto and a couple of pieces with pianist Steven Beck. The Double Concerto for clarinet, bandoneon, and orchestra is only lightly tango-influenced, perhaps taking off from the early "classical" phase of Piazzolla's career, and contains a mightily virtuosic part for Lee that she handles with aplomb. Perhaps the most effective are the short chamber pieces at the end of the album; one might sample Sweet Dreams, where Lee's role is soloistic, but the "breathing" of the bandoneon is exploited as a compositional parameter for a beautiful lyrical effect. Highly recommended for lovers of Piazzolla and tango nuevo, this album will be a pleasure for anyone, and it is good to see U.S. Grammy nominators recognize a release so far out of the commercial mainstream.
