This album mixes Armenian popular and religious songs from the early days of Christianity (let’s not forget that Armenia was the very first country to adopt the Christian religion as state religion in the year 301) to our modern times, in which the numerous massacres, that started at the end of the 19th century and progressively led to the 1915 genocide, are lamented in music. Here is a broad overview with Mount Ararat as a backdrop, Armenians’ symbolic national mountain even though, irony of modern geopolitics, it is now in Turkey… In this music, we find numerous Caucasian influences and a wonderful mix that absorbs Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrianism, the European Middle Ages, Greek Antiquity, in short, this region was and remains an incredible melting pot. The ensemble involves a mix of Caucasian folkloric music: a kamancheh, a duduk (sort of oboe), a qanun – the Oriental equivalent to a table zither –, an oud, various percussions; and medieval and popular Western instruments. A beautiful music at the confluence of folkloric and art music, that comes from far away… © SM/Qobuz
