Fela Kuti is not Afrobeat's inventor but its co-inventor. Without Tony Allen, who died in Paris on April 30th, 2020, at the age of 79, this unique musical genre would never have seen the light of day. Over the years, justice has gradually been done to the great Nigerian drummer and his historical importance. At the beginning of the sixties, his encounter with Fela, a great jazz fan like himself, gave birth to an atypical tandem and to recordings of a unique groove. But Tony Allen was not "just" the Afrobeat drummer. His playing style was unlike any other and a genre in its own right. His style would inspire hordes of other drummers in jazz, rock and pop, and an impressive number of artists would offer him their services for a song or an album. From Ray Lema to Archie Shepp, Susheela Raman, Jeff Mills, Sébastien Tellier, Damon Albarn, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Air, Manu Dibango, Zap Mama, Ray Lema and even Flavia Coelho, it's hard to name all of the people who fell under the spell of his hypnotic, swirling and haunting groove.
