Daft Punk, Curtain Call
by Smaël Bouaici
Eight years after Random Access Memories transcended the artistic concept that had begun with Homework eighteen years earlier, Daft Punk have brought things to a halt. It is as if to say that no further reinvention was possible after their last album, which was the culmination of a career that paid tribute to the pop culture of the 1970s and 1980s.
It would take another eight years for Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter to conceive of a way of expressing their love for the music of the 70s and 80s, which hadn't quite come off on their first album (in particular due to a lack of resources, even though the record was also a confession of faith in DJ culture). With Random Access Memories, they definitively turned their backs on adolescence. "Computers are not really instruments", Thomas Bangalter conceded in 2013. "Human creativity is the ultimate interface. It is much more powerful than a mouse or touch screen.” RAM was therefore conceived as a tribute to this golden age of music production and the mythical studios of the American industry. In particular, Daft Punk are paying homage to California's Hanson studios (where that all-star line-up recorded We Are the World), Capitol (which hosted Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Michael Jackson), the Grammy factory at Conway in Hollywood or the Electric Ladyland that was so dear to Jimi Hendrix in New York.
In the end, two Parisians transcended their artistic concept by sending it back in time, taking advantage of the budget associated with their success to build themselves a luxurious time machine. "When we recorded Random Access Memories, we asked ourselves: what did we like so much about these samples? Extremely short moments of life, lasting a few seconds, and yet so incredibly rich in emotions, harbouring so many human stories, conveying such great memories. To us it seemed the obvious thing to do, to meet all these musicians, these sound engineers, who had helped write the history of pop in the 70s and 80s. Meeting them of course also meant discovering their material and their recording studios…”
And so they invited mythical musicians such as drummer John Robinson Jr, one of the greatest American sidemen, who worked with Quincy Jones and on Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, as well as Greg Leisz, companion to the Eagles, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen and specialist in pedal-steel guitars, a fixture of the West Coast rock that Daft Punk adopted for this album, the better to twist its sound. RAM also allows the duo to realise their fantasy with Nile Rodgers, who puts in a turn on Get Lucky, and to organise a 10-minute tribute to the disco master who inspired them so much, Giorgio Moroder, on the track/podcast Giorgio by Moroder.
On this album, the ultimate in every sense of the word, Daft Punk come full circle with another idol – for them, perhaps, the greatest of all – as they bring in Paul Williams, a folk singer/actor who plays the lead and was responsible for the soundtrack of Phantom of the Paradise, their favourite film. It was Paul Williams, alongside Nile Rodgers, who spoke on behalf of the robots during their 2014 winning streak at the Grammys. And seven years later, it is the melody of their collaboration Touch that concludes the farewell video posted by the group, Epilogue, on February 22nd, 2021. As if there was nothing more to be said.
