About Playlist

From 1967 to 2004 John Peel recorded over 4,000 sessions on his BBC Radio 1 show, performed by over 2,000 artists. These sessions originally came about due to restrictions imposed on the BBC by the Musicians' Union and Phonographic Performance Limited which represented the record companies dominated by the EMI cartel. The BBC had been forced to hire bands to do cover versions of recorded music. The idea behind these restrictions was to create employment and encourage people to buy records and not just listen to them free of charge on the air.

That’s how John Peel sessions started, before inviting bands to play their original songs. The tracks were usually recorded on a 4-track console and mixed in a single day for demo-like results, somewhere between a live performance and a finished recording. Among his many guests were David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Nick Drake, Nico, The Stranglers, Pixies, Interpol, PJ Harvey, Pavement, Pale Saints, The Wedding Present, Pulp, The Smiths, Mansun, Dead Can Dance, Buzzcocks, Killing Joke and many, many others…
