About Playlist

I tend to shut down music when I’m in the studio. I’m interested in how pop melodies land, and how they can trigger a feeling of familiarity in the listener. I believe that if you can achieve that feeling, your ideas will have greater impression on the audience. Tracks that forever do this for me is ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ (the saddest, most perfect of dance tunes).

The tracks on this playlist made sense to me when the album was finished. Mostly lyrically with tracks such as ‘I Don’t Blame You’, ‘Motion Picture Soundtrack’ and ‘Devil in Me’. There are lines in all these tracks which have hit me recently like –wow, that’s exactly the airspace that Flamingo was born from: “there must have been a light in your eye, that you never saw the devil in me” (devil in me, Augie March)

Sonically I love the menace of Fiona Apple’s Tidal from the first bass push. I have never believed a piano player more. Tidal is a strong, personal album – delivered with conviction and confidence. There is nothing passive about that record, similar with Flamingo.

The Fall and Suicide are a wellspring of inspiration for me. Probably the closest to sonic references on Flamingo are from the Fall. As close as we allowed anyway! Tracks like ‘Success’, ‘Colour Television’ ‘Dance Yourself Clean’ and Perfect Day’ have incredible span. They’re redemptive in a way I most identify with which is that all joys are hard won. Another key theme on Flamingo.
