Elton John: The First 10 Years

by Nicolas Magenham

What remains from the early years of Elton John’s career? A bountiful discography and an incalculable number of exuberant and occasionally melancholic hits. For the release of David Fletcher’s Elton John biopic, Rocketman, let us look back at this wonderful artist’s career throughout the 1970s.

It was very much thanks to the three albums recorded in Chateau d’Hérouville that Elton John became an international star, in particular thanks to the last addition: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973). Celebrated both by critics and the public, this fantastic double album sold 30 million copies worldwide. It begins with an epic progressive rock track of over 11 minutes (Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding), in which Elton John’s piano, David Hentschel’s synths and Davey Johnstone’s guitar were all intended to interpret the soundtrack of the singer’s own funeral. In a more sober style, this album contains the first version of Candle in the Wind, a ballad on Marilyn Monroe (and more generally the theme of ephemeral existence). Death clearly haunts this album despite the lively, overflowing energy that animates it. But whose death does it speak of? Perhaps it is that of Elton Johns past life, his dull, black-and-white youth from which he broke free into a world of colour (albeit artificial?) that characterized his artistry during the first half of the seventies. The reference to the film The Wizard of Oz in the song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is representative of this transformation (without needing to mention the gay imagery omnipresent in this album).

A little after the release of the forgettable Caribou (1974), Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975) was released. A musical autobiography in which Elton John (Captain Fantastic) and Bernie Taupin (The Brown Dirt Cowboy) look back on their difficult beginnings in London from 1967 to 1969. This record includes notably the song Someone Saved my Life Tonight which details the disastrous engagement of Elton John and Linda Woodrow and his attempted suicide in 1968. The “Someone” in the title refers to blues singer Long John Baldry who convinced John to split with the young lady so as not to squander his artistry and emotional state over a failed marriage. Still, in 1975, Elton John released his tenth album entitled Rock of the Westies in which one can find the single Island Girl as well as the famous duet with English singer Kiki Dee, Don’t Go Breaking my Heart a sparkling homage to legendary Motown duets.

Next in 1976 came the double album Blue Moves, in which the sixth track is a homage to Édith Piaf (Cage the Songbird). After Marilyn Monroe and before Princess Di, one can note Elton John’s predilection for the celebration – even the fetishization – of certain charismatic feminine figures. In 1978 arose a mini-revolution in the well-oiled machine of unrelenting songwriting as neither lyricist Bernie Taupin nor producer Gus Dudgeon were credited in A Single Man. They were replaced respectively by Gary Osborne and… Elton John himself who co-produced the album with his musicians. Among other curious features of the album is the singular presence of the players of Watford Football Club in Big Dipper and the gospel Georgia, as well as an exceptionally bass tonality from Elton John in certain songs. John’s decade finished itself with Victim of Love in 1979, a disco-inspired album that convinced neither critics nor the public nor Elton John himself (who was relegated to the position of singer and interpreter without the help of Bernie Taupin’s lyricism). The seventies finished then with a clear artistic solitude that echoed John’s isolation. This album also announced the beginning of the singers checkered career. However, he progressively pulled himself out of the personal troubles in which he had been plunged (a redemption symbolized by I’m Still Standing on Too Low for Zero in 1983). Finally, he would become an active and courageous defender of LGBT rights and entered the forefront of the fight against AIDS. Activist or Artist, what role would most mark the second part of Elton John’s career? This is yet to be seen, with or without color-tinted glasses.
