The Golden Age of American Death Metal
by Clément Bruni
An often rejected, parodied and misinterpreted sub-genre of metal, the fierce death metal has nevertheless succeeded in garnering a significant following over the decades. Arriving in the 80s, the genre continues to evolve; from its early pursuit of the ultra-violent to its more recent incorporation of aspects from more mainstream genres. Let us look back at the origins of death metal.
This was in part due to the nature of death metal itself. Its violent sound, inhumane vocals and raw, morbid iconography disturbed some. Godflesh’s video, approved by Columbia and initially meant to be broadcast on MTV, was never shown due to its strong religious connotations that the channel discerned offensive. In 1991, Earache fell victim to the Obscene Publication Act, a law originally intended to forbid all obscene writing that held the possibility of “depraving or corrupting the reader”. Albums by Carcass, Cadaver and Filthy Christians were seized by the police in the label’s locality as their covers were deemed offensive. Sales of a record by Swedish group Dismember were also banned in England due to the lyrics in the song Skin her Alive! Legal action was taken, and covered by the musical press, which amounted to a victory for distributors.
What’s more, disagreements arose within groups with regard to what musical direction the bands would follow. Interviews that follow the development of Carcass’ album Swansong and Napalm Death’s Fear Emptiness Despair are rather representative of such quarrels. Indeed, all the inertia surrounding the movement since its conception in 1983 was based on the frantic pursuit of speed and sonic aggression. Once these goals were achieved and pushed as far as they could go, the question of where the genre would head next arose in an evident and direct manner.
And so, the mid-90s marked an important milestone in the history of the genre, with the end of the original death metal. Responses to how the genre would move on from there musically varied from group to group. Some groups continued to push virtuosity and aggression a little further, some continued their journey in search of innovation, while others continue to remodel themselves by means of merging with other more mainstream genres. Such has notably been the case with the Swedish scene, which appeared slightly after the American scene, and will be known as much for its origins as its musical style.
