Otis Redding, King of Soul

by Marc Zisman

52 years ago, the soulful shooting star fell from the sky. At the young age of 26, Otis Redding had only had the time to release six albums. More than enough however to be considered as one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.

Back to that fateful day of December 10th, 1967. It’s hard not to get a feeling of an unfinished symphony. There’s a drop of bitterness in leaving such a mark on the popular music of his time in just a few years… A form of frustration, which can be easily brushed away by listening again and again to these recordings, on which time has no hold. Albums created by a man fully possessed by his art and his mission. In his essential book Sweet Soul Music released in 1986, writer and music historian Peter Guralnick cited Rodgers Redding, Otis’ younger brother, who told that from a very young age, the future giant of soul music would come out of concerts of his idols Little Richard and James Brown with the same words: “One of these days, I’ll be like them!” and Rodgers adding: “Nothing could stop him. Nothing!
