If there was a single proof of the incredible longevity and immense popularity of the this genre, it would be the exceptional career of Metallica. Nurtured both by the historical pillars of Hard and Metal, from Deep Purple to Blue Oÿster Cult through Thin Lizzy or Motörhead, to underground hardcore bands, they have gone from bitter rehearsals in their famous garage days to the biggest stadiums and festivals on the planet. And all this in more than thirty years of hard work with many records and rewards, but also with many sacrifices and fierce opposition. With nearly 130 million albums sold worldwide, Metallica is undeniably the symbol of a success that owes nothing to any formatting, like all those musicians who have chosen a path other than that of easy success. But, as varied as the styles they have tried, from the Thrash Speed of the beginnings to the experiments not always understood of St Anger or Lulu, they cannot summarize the innumerable currents that have developed in more than fifty years.
For a long time we were content with Hard Rock or Heavy Metal standards, but in the early 80s, some opted for the excess of colours of glam, while others were content with Black Metal or Death Metal. Between these extremes, some will defend an elite technicality, through Prog Metal, while others will push back the boundaries of sound aggression via Grindcore, Industrial Metal, Doom, Sludge ... Logically, ambitious or reckless musicians will not fail to create bridges between all these schools, so Mathcore will combine technique and aggressiveness, Symphonic Metal will reintroduce classic influences from Deep Purple, Rap Metal will dig deeper into the influences of Hip Hop widely exploited in the Neo (or Nu) Metal, while Folk Metal will tap into traditional Celtic...
