The Great History of Malian Music
by Benjamin Minimum
Mandingo traditions or urban intersections, ancestral chants from the griots or dance bands on the day following the Independence, the family tree of Malian music possesses deep roots, leafy branches and a strong sap. Let’s take a look back at the fascinating history.
At the same time, Amadou Bagayoko, former guitarist of the Ambassadeurs, and his wife Mariam Doumbia found success under the name Amadou & Mariam, “the blind couple from Mali”. Over the years, they worked with M, Manu Chao and the English Damon Albarn. The latter, fascinated by African music and especially Malian music, organized live and recorded meetings in Africa and Europe between African and Western musicians. African Express offered an important exposure to young Malian talents like the singer Fatoumata Diawara, Cheick Tidiane Seck’s protégée, the ngoni player Bassékou Kouyaté and the Niafunké band Songhoy Blues.
Malian artists living in France have enjoyed some very nice careers. Chorister of Salif Keïta, Mamani Keïta took part in the first batch of the Electro Bamako from Marc Minelli, a rocker from Le Havre, before working with Arthur H’s guitarist, Nicolas Repac, then with the Parisian Afro-groove band Arat Kilo. The daughter of a diplomat, born near Bamako, Rokia Traoré has travelled a lot, but remains very attached to the culture of her motherland. The public discovered her thanks to the Musiques Métisses festival in Angoulême, whose director, Christian Mousset, has also enabled the rejuvenation of the careers of Super Rail Band and Boubacar Traoré. Rokia Traoré has established herself as a major singer-songwriter and involves herself with ardor in Mali’s cultural life. She has also worked with the Kronos Quartet, years before the Trio Da Kali. In 2017, the Californian string quartet and the Malian griot musician trio have released the very successful Ladilikan, which confronts the griot traditions to string arrangements.
Champions of musical elasticity, kora players Ballaké Sissoko and Toumani Diabaté bring their immense talent and their deep traditional knowledge to often fascinating cultural exchanges. Ballaké regularly meets in the studio or on stage with the Iranian percussion family Chemirani, violoncellist Vincent Ségal and the band 3MA, composed of Moroccan oud player Driss el Maloumi and Madagascan valiha player Rajery. Toumani was one of Ali Farka Touré’s last music companions, recording two albums with him: In the Heart of the Moon and Ali & Toumani, both winning a Grammy Award. He was at the centre of the meeting between Cuban and Malian musicians on AfroCubism in 2010, held unforgettable concerts with the Iranian kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor and worked with Björk on the Volta album. The French rappers of Malian descent, Mokobé (Traoré) and Oxmo Puccino, born Abdoulaye Diarra in Ségou, rarely include Mandingo elements in their productions. But Mokobé invited Oumou Sangaré and Amadou & Mariam onto his album Mon Afrique in 2007 and in 2017, Oxmo took part in M’s project Lamomali, alongside Fatoumata Diawara, Toumani and Sidiki Diabaté. The latter, an excellent kora player like his father, has become a star in Western Africa thanks to joyful music videos and a blend of coupé-décalé, Mandingo rhythms and R&B romances. Traditional or blended, Malian musicians radiated in the past as they do today and everything suggests that they are ready for the future.
