Considered as one of the most inspired pianists of his generation, Severin von Eckardstein explores three major cycles of French music from the 1900s, associating Claude Debussy’s two revolutionary books Images (1904-1907) and Gabriel Dupont’s La Maison dans les dunes (1907-1909) as part of this debut album under the Artalinna label: this suite of 10 pieces with memorable atmospheres filled with luminous colours and heady melodies will stand out for many as a musical revelation! © Artalinna

Cuban pianist Gabriel Urgell Reyes proposes a three-part journey to the worlds of four great composers of 20th century. Alongside Ginastera are notably featured Fariñas of Cuba (Vol. 1) and Mompou of Spain (Vol. 2). The repetitive aesthetics of Reich then concludes this exploration of Ginastera’s spellbinding chamber music (Vol. 3). It is a little known heritage with unrivaled density and richness, and an inspired, ardently free vision. © Artalinna/Qobuz

Aline Piboule offers us a journey to the country of light. For her first solo album, she brings together three fundamental French piano works, Fauré’s Ballade and Theme and Variations and Dutilleux’s Sonata, which has become one of her favourite pieces. The programme is made up of a succession of insistent variations on the theme of light, contrasting aesthetics which very often oscillate between shadows, sound and silences. Aline Piboule’s playing has a fairly typical French charm, fluctuating between robustness and tender sensuality. © Artalinna

For several years now, Hiroaki Takenouchi had been keen to champion the music of a major Romantic composer, William Sterndale Bennett – an English virtuoso pianist, born in 1816, and considered one of the most captivating virtuosos in his time because of his flamboyance and mastery of the keyboard. Here, Takenouchi chooses one of what are indisputably Sterndale Bennett’s most accomplished scores, the Piano Sonata in F minor Op. 13, dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: the work unveils a romantic ballad tone, which is both exciting and genuinely exhilarating, like the great scores of Mendelssohn or Schumann. To complete his programme Takenouchi offers one of the latter’s masterpieces for piano, Symphonic Etudes (1834) and dedicated… to William Sterndale Bennett. Indeed, Hiroaki Takenouchi’s new album released on the Artalinna label offers us interplay of reciprocal dedications to these three great names of European Romanticism – Mendelssohn, Schumann and Sterndale Bennett. His first volume of a double anthology dedicated to Haydn had been honoured by an ffff from the French magazine French magazine Télérama (highest award).

Still little known by music lovers, Japanese pianist Hiroaki Takenouchi has a boundless admiration for the works of Joseph Haydn, whose terrific inventiveness he has been analyzing for many years. For this first album on the Artalinna label, he proposes four sonatas that were composed in the early 1770s. They feature a dense, spirited, serene, and joyful Haydn that is consistently uncluttered. © Artalinna/Qobuz

Here, an inspired interpreter of Russian music, from Rachmaninov to Scriabin, including Medtner and Lyapunov, Florian Noack invites us on a journey to the hearts of two great polyphonists of the late Romantic era. Both the poetic science of Nikolai Medtner and Johannes Brahms, and the density of their writing, originate in a search for polyphonics with a thousand ramifications, testifying in this sense to their shared love for the great masters of the past, such as Bach and Beethoven.

Here, the young Chinese pianist Ran Jia invites us on an absolutely beautiful journey, both for her technical prowess and her expression. An alloy of lyricism and fiery spirit, every interstice demonstrates her technical skill and poetic imagination, and more broadly her affinity with one of her favourite composers: Schubert. © Artalinna / Qobuz

Latvian pianist Vestard Shimkus takes us on a journey to the core of Rachmaninoff’s music both at its most brilliant and secretive. From the famous Piano Sonata No. 2 – in its original version – to the more uncommon Variations of a Theme of Chopin, to three of the most extraordinary Preludes of Opus 32, Shimkus reveals a clear and powerful style with a strong lyrical side. A truly astounding, mind-blowing album and a musician with exceptional eloquence. © Artalinna/Qobuz

A disciple of Jean-Marc Luisada at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, the Russian pianist Alexandra Matvievskaya lately immersed herself in the work of Gabriel Fauré, and was quickly fascinated. With incomparable intensity, she expresses its tragic power as much as she exalts its harmonic and polyphonic depth. One of the great Fauré recitals of the last twenty years. © Artalinna

For this recital in Paris, in April 2019, the Latvian pianist Vestard Shimkus imagined a program focused on preludes and fugues. A first part devoted to preludes confirmed his affinity with Scriabin (Preludes Op. 74) and his performance in Debussy also displayed a bewildering art of suggestion. In the second part, introduced with a majestic composition by the pianist, two excerpts from J. S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, which preceded two of Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues, performed with an impressive dramatic force. A very original journey, spanning three centuries of musical creation, by one of the most fascinating personalities of the classical scene. © Artalinna

After a remarkable Chopin programme in 2010 on the Artalinna label, François Dumont embarks on a journey at the heart of Johann Sebastian Bach’s piano works. The four dance suites brought together here form an imaginary cycle of variations on the letters of the composer’s name, B.A.C.H, including a plurality of characters, atmospheres and expressions. The French pianist offers a dynamic vision of the Cantor’s work. Demonstrating a deep understanding of its polyphony, his magnificent and colourful playing unleashes the most thrilling dancing energy.

After a first album for Artalinna dedicated to Rachmaninoff, released in 2014, Vestard Shimkus now invites us on a journey to the heart of the work of Scriabin, one of his favourite composers, alternating “miniatures” (Feuillets d’album, Preludes) and large forms (Poème-Nocturne, Sonatas). Shimkus’ interpretations, devoid of violence, emphasize the formal clarity and harmonic modernity of the Russian composer, at times revealing unprecedented colours (Sonata No. 4). An album that showcases a singular and expressive universe. © Artalinna
