Wata Igarashi
Wata Igarashi is highly praised throughout the techno world for his precisely crafted yet deeply psychedelic tracks, as well as his immersive DJ sets and live performances. Throughout the 2010s, the Tokyo-born producer and sound designer earned acclaim for his club performances, podcasts, and a growing discography of EPs that resembled a more atmospheric take on minimal techno and acid, including 2018's Question and Answer. For his full-length debut, 2023's Agartha, Igarashi explored a less club-centric sound inspired by Berlin School electronics and '90s ambient techno.
Igarashi began releasing music during the early 2010s, with the minimal techno EP As It Is appearing in 2011, followed by additional EPs on Sienna Obscure and Counter Pulse. He also composed soundtracks for the Night Aquarium events held at the annual Eco Edo Nihonbashi Art Aquarium exhibition. His 2014 EP Junctions was the first release on Berlin's Midgar label, and he began an association with The Bunker New York, performing at the techno institution's international club nights and releasing the EP Mood of the Machines on the imprint in 2016. Igarashi released Haziest Just Before the Dawn on DJ Nobu's Bitta label, as well as several further Midgar and Bunker EPs. 2018's Question and Answer EP and his dazzling remixes of Aurora Halal's 2019 track "Eternal Blue" particularly attracted positive attention.
Teaming up with Voiski as the duo WAV, Igarashi released the EP 9719 on Delsin in 2020. He then started his own digital imprint, WIP, and began issuing a series of numbered EPs, starting off with tranquil ambient pieces before later releasing techno tracks he created for his live performances. He also released the EP Travelling on Omnidisc, followed by 2021's New Dawn, issued by Figure. Igarashi landed on Kompakt with 2023's Agartha, his debut album, which explored ambient and kosmische influences as well as jazz fusion-inspired improvisation.
