Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason - 4F de Télérama - Choc de Classica - Choc Classica de l'année - Hi-Res Audio
The first part of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, and the shortest opera in the cycle, Das Rheingold serves as an introductory evening performance that opens the series, followed successively by three full-length music dramas, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Die Götterdämmerung. However, this concert recording by Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra is the second installment in their Ring, following the early 2013 release of Die Walküre. By reviving Wagner's music in Russia, which was banned during the Soviet era and remained little explored for decades, Gergiev has tapped into a rich vein of artistry that brings a fresh appreciation of the Ring's drama and sonorities. The international cast, headed by René Pape as a powerful Wotan, features some of the best Wagner singers available, including Ekaterina Gubanova as Fricka and Nikolai Putilin as Alberich. The critically praised Mariinsky Orchestra has demonstrated its great skill in playing Wagner's demanding score, and the SACD presentation gives it astonishing clarity, depth, and presence, all required to make these mythological music dramas come to life. To complete Gergiev's cycle, Das Rheingold will be followed by releases of Siegfried and Die Götterdämmerung in 2014.

One of the most compelling conductors of any age, Valery Gergiev has brought fresh energy to operatic life in Russia, and his performances of Richard Wagner's Des Ring der Nibelungen have been exciting firsts for the the Mariinsky Orchestra and eager audiences in St. Petersburg. Recorded between 2011 and 2012, the first Ring music drama to be released on the Mariinsky label is Die Walküre, sung in German, and this recording has received generous critical praise for the phenomenal playing of the orchestra and the first-rate singing of the international cast, which includes Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund, Nina Stemme as Brünnhilde, Anja Kampe as Sieglinde, Mikhail Petrenko as Hunding, and René Pape as Wotan. Gergiev is renowned for his powerful interpretations of both symphonic and operatic repertoire, though this dynamic performance may even surpass his past efforts in intensity and sustained power. Yet his careful attention to the details in the score makes this four-SACD version a delight to hear, and because of its extreme clarity, credible presence, and astonishing spatial dimensions, it is a Walküre that even newcomers will find captivating from the first measure. Die Walküre is the second part of Wagner's tetralogy, though the Mariinsky recording of the first part, Das Rheingold, has a release date in September 2013, to be followed by Siegfried and Die Götterdämmerung in 2014.

Gustav Mahler and the Munich Philharmonic share a very special connection. As a composer he sustainably linked the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. The world premiere of his Symphony No. 4 took place under his baton on 25 November 1901 in Munich’s Großen Kaim-Saal with the then called Kaim-Orchester, present day Munich Philharmonic. His works have been a substantial part of the Munich Philharmonic’s core repertoire ever since and the orchestra has excelled on many occasions. After the MPHIL release of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in September 2016 now follows the release of the Symphony No. 4 with which the orchestra’s history is so closely intertwined. The live concert recording released on this album took place at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich, the orchestra’s home, with Salzburg soprano Genia Kuehmeier. Valery Gergiev has paid the Austro-German repertoire particular attention throughout his career, which ignited a lasting fascination for Gustav Mahler. Over recent decades he has continued to explore the Austro-German repertoire, garnering adulation, especially for his interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Mahler and Bruckner – music that is at the very heart of the Munich Philharmonic’s repertoire. © Warner Classics
