Tobias Ringborg

Tobias Ringborg has maintained dual high-level careers as a violinist and later as an opera conductor. In the latter capacity, he is among the most active figures in Scandinavia and has a long record of productions in Denmark and the anglophone world. Ringborg was born in Stockholm on November 2, 1973. His father, Erland Ringborg, was an educational administrator, and his brother Patrik Ringborg is a conductor. Tobias attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, studying violin and graduating in 1994. That year, he won Sweden's Soloist Prize and decided to continue his violin studies at the Juilliard School in New York, earning a degree there in 1996. Upon his return to Europe, he performed widely with Swedish orchestras. He continues to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, but he found himself becoming fascinated by the idea of conducting. At ten, he had acquired a score of Puccini's Tosca and studied it obsessively, gaining not only a love for Puccini's operas but also the habit of approaching a score as a conductor would. He took a conducting class and then entered a competition in 2000 in the Swedish city of Helsingborg and won. He familiarized himself with operatic and symphonic scores by teaching for a time in school music programs. By 2001, Ringborg had conducted Verdi's La traviata at Stockholm's Folkoperan company, and Puccini's La bohème at the Royal Swedish Opera. For two years, he was associated with the Malmö Opera, adding various operas to his repertory; he has continued to specialize in Italian opera and the music of Mozart. He has gone on to appear frequently at the Royal Swedish Opera and has also conducted productions at the Norwegian Opera, the Danish National Opera, and Oper Leipzig, among other houses. He has appeared at the Garsington Opera and the Scottish Opera in Britain, and several houses in Australia and New Zealand. Ringborg has been active as an orchestral conductor as well, making his debut at the Barbican in London in 2005. He conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic at the 2011 Nobel Prize Ceremony and has also appeared with such groups as the Norrköping Symphony, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal in Germany. Ringborg has made more than 15 recordings, appearing both as a violinist and conductor. He has recorded for the Caprice, Sterling, and Naxos labels, among others. Ringborg has recorded both chamber and orchestral music of composer Helena Munktell, as a violinist and conductor. In 2021, he was heard on a recording of Munktell's Violin Sonata in E flat major, Op. 21, on the BIS label.
