Surie

SuRie (real name, Susanna Cork) is an English pop singer/songwriter known for representing the United Kingdom in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Born in Essex in 1989 and raised in Hertfordshire, she became interested in the arts at an early age, learning to play piano at three years old and beginning to write her own music at 12. Inspired by the work of artists such as Alicia Keys and Billy Joel, she initially aspired to develop her own material with the hope of signing to the British label Bella Union. However, she ultimately went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she trained in classical music and learned to play the oboe, while also expanding her skills in writing, singing, and composition. At the same time, she worked as a backing singer for various acts and played piano at jazz lounges around the city. Following her studies, she performed as a backing vocalist and dancer for Belgian indie pop singer Loïc Nottet. She was featured in his performance of the song "Rhythm Inside" for the 2015 Eurovision Contest in Vienna. The following year saw her put out her first solo releases; her eponymous EP arrived in July and was followed with the Out of Universe EP in September. Her debut LP, Something Beginning With, arrived that Christmas and was written and recorded over the course of a year in various locations including Australia, Sweden, the U.S., and her home studio setup in the U.K. Susanna went on to work as a musical director for Blanche -- Belgium's 2017 Eurovision entry -- and helped write the electropop single "City Lights" with her for the contest. In January 2018, SuRie was announced as one of the artists competing for representation of the U.K. for that year's contest in Portugal. She competed for the opportunity among five other performers on the BBC television show Eurovision: You Decide. She won the selection process in early February with her performance of the single "Storm," a midtempo track with an upbeat synth-laden chorus and piano-led verses. The track finished in 24th place out of 26 at the final.
