Sofía Valdés

Turning her soft, breezy vocals to stories of troubled romance, Panama’s Sofía Valdés built her following in the early 2020s with an earnest yet graceful style of songwriting. She garnered buzz for tracks like "Little Did I Know" and "Handful of Water" before releasing her debut EP, 2021's Ventura. She returned in 2022 with a second EP, the lyrical and romantic In Bloom. The granddaughter of renowned Cuban vocalist Miguelito Valdés, Panama-born singer/songwriter Sofía Valdés had musical dreams from a young age, first taking up the guitar at eight. With early influences ranging from Nick Drake to João Gilberto, Valdés’ first original material surfaced when she was 13. Her musical ambitions soon landed her a place at Michigan’s Interlochen Arts Academy in the U.S., where she honed her songwriting talents and English skills. After transferring to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in the U.K., Valdés caught the attention of Warner Records, which signed the young musician to the label in early 2020. Working on her debut EP during the COVID-19 pandemic, Valdés began to record some of the songs she had worked on through her teenage years, debuting in September 2020 with the woozy, searching "Little Did I Know." October brought with it the bilingual "Handful of Water," December saw the release of Gwen Stefani cover "The Sweet Escape," and in January 2021 Valdés kicked off the year with the more downbeat, acoustically driven "Lonely." Her debut EP, Ventura, was released in February that year. Comprising her material thus far and adding three new tracks, Valdés’ used her sensitive vocals to relate narratives of love, longing, and self-discovery, all while incorporating elements ranging from indie pop to bossa nova. Another equally romantic and lyrical EP, In Bloom, arrived in May 2022.
