SAYGRACE

With her limber and soulful voice, SAYGRACE (aka singer and songwriter Grace Sewell), exhibits a strong Amy Winehouse influence in her commanding, retro-contemporary R&B style. After going to number one in her native Australia with a cover of Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" that featured G-Easy, her debut album, 2016's FMA, cracked the Top 40 in both Australia and the U.S. She followed it with releases including the 2020 EP The Defining Moments of SAYGRACE: Girlhood, Fuckboys & Situationships and 2023 dance collaborations with Two Friends ("No Saving Us") and Hayden James ("Beggin' You"). She returned to sultry soul form with the solo single "twentyfourseven" in 2024. Raised in suburban Brisbane, Sewell had grandparents who were professional musicians, and her older brother Conrad Sewell is a chart-topping songwriter and recording artist in his own right. In 2015, at the age of 18, Grace signed with RCA Records (originally as simply Grace) and released her debut EP, Memo, which included the single "You Don't Own Me." A liberally updated cover of the 1963 Lesley Gore hit with additional lyrics by rapper G-Eazy, it was co-produced by Quincy Jones and Parker Ighile (Rihanna). The recording garnered millions of digital streams while hitting the top of the singles chart in Australia, and also resulted in a Grammy nomination thanks to its inclusion on the Suicide Squad soundtrack (nominated for Best Compilation Album). Her debut full-length album, FMA (short for "Forgive My Attitude"), appeared in July 2016. Within a few months, Memo entered the bottom half of the Billboard 200, and FMA climbed to number 34 in the States, 42 in the U.K., and as high as 32 in Australia. In 2017, she was featured alongside Lil Yachty on the DJ Cassidy track "Honor." When she returned with the single "Boys Ain't Shit" in 2019, it was with the updated moniker SAYGRACE. The song appeared on the next year's The Defining Moments of SAYGRACE: Girlhood, Fuckboys & Situationships EP. Meanwhile, "Boys Ain't Shit" charted in Ireland, and reworked versions materialized featuring the likes of Becky G, Tate McRae, Flo Milli. SAYGRACE continued to release music in the singles format, including the 2020 solo effort "Used To" and 2021's "If There Really Is a God," a collaboration with Femme It Forward. She resurfaced with a featured spot on the Two Friends dance single "No Saving Us" in 2023, the same year she appeared on another club-oriented song, Hayden James' "Beggin' You." Sewell had written hundreds of songs by the time she released her first self-penned material in three years. The single "twentyfourseven" kicked off her return in early 2024.
