Quatuor Hermès

Quatuor Hermès performs and records standard 19th century quartet repertory but has also entered into several unusual collaborations. The group has recorded for La Dolce Volta and other labels. Quatuor Hermès was formed in 2008 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon. The group is named for Hermes, the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, and the sense of the name is that the group is a messenger between the composer's music and the audience's sensibilities. The four members were, and remain, violinists Omer Bouchez and Elise Liu, violist Lou Yung-Hsin Chang, and cellist Yan Levionnois. The group studied with the Ravel Quartet at the conservatory and went on for further work with Quatuor Ysaÿe, the Artemis Quartett, chamber music teacher Eberhard Feltz, and later pianist Alfred Brendel, with whom the quartet remains in contact. Major honors, including wins at the Geneva Competition and the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York, helped the quartet's career to grow, as did financial support from the Fondation Banque Populaire. From 2012 to 2016, Quatuor Hermès served as quartet-in-residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels, Belgium. In 2014, Quatuor Hermès made its recording debut on the La Dolce Volta label with an album of Schumann's Op. 41 string quartets. The quartet has toured internationally, and the group members list New York's Carnegie Hall, the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, and London's Wigmore Hall as the venues that have made the strongest impression on them. The quartet has also often appeared at festivals internationally, including the Folles Journées de Nantes, the Mantova Chamber Music Festival, and the Alizés Spring in Morocco. It has shared stages with such major artists as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Nicholas Angelich, and violist Kim Kashkashian, and it collaborated with accordionist Félicien Brut and double bassist Édouard Macarez on Le Pari des Bretelles, a re-creation in performance and on recordings of Parisian popular music of the 1920s. Further Quatuor Hermès recordings on La Dolce Volta included albums of music by Schubert and Brahms, and in 2022, the quartet was heard on the album Charlotte Sohy: Compositrice de la Belle Époque.
