Moroccan musician Meryem Aboulouafa studied interior design before fully embarking on her music career in the late 2010s. Noted for layering her haunting, atmospheric vocals, Aboulouafa was born in Casablanca in 1988 and studied at music conservatories in Africa and Europe before turning professional. Israeli musician Keren Ann helped shape a set of songs Aboulouafa had written, based on her own poetry, which were later recorded in Paris by French producer Para One, with assistance from French musician Ojard. The resulting album, Meryem, was released on Animal63 Records in May of 2020, and featured the singles “Breath of Roma” and “Deeply”.
