If Kevin Gates' debut album seems wiser and more confident -- not cocky, but confident -- than the competition, consider that the 2 Pac-styled, serious rapper began dropping his mixtapes back in 2007. His Luca Brasi series is revered and crucial while his aboveground mixtapes Stranger Than Fiction and By Any Means felt official, with hooky thug tracks meeting genre-expanding experiments. Islah is no different, it's just built like an official album and meant to last. Check the excellent singles "Kno One," "Really Really," and "La Familia" for some easy persuasion, and then know that the album is devoid of superstar appearances because the captivating Gates doesn't need them. ~ David Jeffries

For some strange reason, Kevin Gates rarely appears on the shortlist of today’s most important rappers. However, the Louisiana native who started out with local legends Lil Boosie and Weebie in the mid-2000s is one of the most gifted and regular rappers out there. The ex-prodigy, who was promised a great career under the Young Money banner (having caught Lil Wayne and Birdman’s attention), instead took the plunge and made a name for himself with an impressive series of self-produced mixtapes. He received critical acclaim in 2013 with The Luca Brasi Story, a string of sensitive street-rap hymns rapped and sung to perfection. Following his next mixtape, Stranger Than Fiction, the major record label Atlantic bet on Gates but it wasn’t until 2016 that he saw huge success with Islah, his first official album carried by two huge hits (2 Phones and Really Really). On I’m Him, the Baton Rouge rapper reveals his most masterful vocal acrobatics and his best sung refrains. Not taking any downtime, and remaining alone at the mic on all seventeen short tracks, Kevin Gates sits his competitors down for a lesson in rap and gives his listeners countless reasons to admire to his vocal prowess, fluctuating speeds and incomparable hooks (particularly on Push It). The energy is contagious, the flow never runs dry and Gates has a knack for choosing great beats (like on the stomping, lugubrious track What I Like). To be consumed on top volume. © Damien Besançon/Qobuz

More momentous than its title implies, Luca Brasi 3 is Kevin Gates' first full-length project since he was granted release from prison. Another commercial mixtape from Gates, it certainly distinguishes itself from the first two Luca Brasi volumes -- and everything else the rapper has released -- with rhymes inspired by his incarceration, whether he's referring to the strain it put on his marriage or the respect of his fellow inmates. There's less emphasis here on hooks than on the verses -- a perhaps inevitable development, given the circumstances. Gates has always tended to keep featured appearances to a minimum, but here, he operates strictly in solitude.

Talking truth with his lead single "I Don't Get Tired," major-label rapper Kevin Gates continues to work the underground hard with Luca Brasi, Vol. 2, his second entry in DJ Drama's Gangsta Grillz series of mixtapes. Previously released yet high-profile numbers like "John Gotti" (a slowly grinding gangsta song with production from Red on da Track) and "Out the Mud" (a hypnotic, Three 6 Mafia-styled night track with the Runners in charge) land here, while new cuts like "Talk on Phones" (a weird, wobbly number featuring B.o.B) and "Word Around Town" (Rich Homie Quan joins for a superior trap anthem) draw just as much interest. The casual fan might find the release too fat and loose, but Gates' mixtapes always bring bigger names and bigger beats than the competition, and Luca Brasi, Vol. 2 is no exception. ~ David Jeffries

Baton Rouge MC Kevin Gates released the sequel to his well-received 2014 mixtape, By Any Means, in September of 2017, soon after he began a lengthy prison sentence for felony gun possession. The release was compiled by Dreka Gates, Kevin's wife and manager, and ranges from his more accessible, melodic material (such as the Joan Osborne-riffing single "What If") to harrowing street tales to sax-themed slow jams. The mixtape's only guest is PnB Rock, who appears on "Beautiful Scars." By Any Means 2 was released in September of 2017 and hit the Top 100 of the Billboard 200 album chart.
