June Freedom

June Freedom's blend of dance-pop reflects the heritage of the West African island nation of Cabo Verde, where he spent his formative years. After making a splash with his debut single “Dor d’um Kriolu” in 2020, he further established himself on the albums Anchor Baby (2021) and 7 Seas (2023). Born Pedro Fontas Veiga, Jr. in Boston, Freedom spent most of his childhood in Cabo Verde, where he honed his English and Spanish as well as the country’s official languages of Portuguese and a local variation of Creole. Inspired by a thriving local music scene that meshed hip-hop, R&B, worldbeat, and Zouk, June Freedom burst onto the scene with the 2020 single “Dor d’um Kriolu,” a collaboration with Nelson Freitas, a Zouk pioneer from Cabo Verde. Accolades from Akon and Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis followed, and Freedom moved first to New York, then to Los Angeles, to bring his sound to America. Collaborations with artists from America (R&B singer Stacy Barthe) and his Cape Verdean countrymen (rappers Djodje and Elji Beatzkilla) formed the backbone of his debut, 2021’s Anchor Baby. After gaining attention with upbeat but laid-back dance tracks like “YSL,” “Melanin,” and “Andréia,” June expanded the scope of Anchor Baby for its one-year anniversary with a deluxe edition that doubled the album length. In 2023, he was poised to make even more waves in America, performing at showcases like South by Southwest and AfriCon, signing a deal with hip-hop indie EMPIRE, and releasing his second album, 7 Seas, punctuated by standout tracks like “Messi” and “Say Salud.”
