JS

It should come as no surprise that the voices of this R&B vocal duo accentuate one another perfectly. After all, JS stands for Johnson Sisters and as youngsters Kim and Kandy Johnson (b. Los Angeles, California, USA) began singing together in church choirs. Word began to spread in their local community of the sisters’ vocal talents, leading to further performances at weddings, banquets, shopping malls, and talent shows. Through it all, gospel music remained the Johnson’s primary love, and they were afforded the opportunity to sing alongside renowned gospel vocalists such as Andrae Crouch and Shirley Caesar. From there, Kim and Kandy’s singing career continued to pick up steam as they performed on US television shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and Ally McBeal, sang alongside Barbra Streisand (for former US President Bill Clinton), supported Erykah Badu in concert, and lent vocals to the theme song from another US show, One World. Additionally Kim’s vocals were also featured on the soundtrack for Steven Spielberg’s Amistad. It was not until the sisters met Isley Brothers vocalist Ronald Isley that JS began thinking about launching their own recording career. Isley was so taken by the Johnson sisters’ talents that he became their manager, and also had them guest on the Isley Brothers releases Eternal (2001) and Body Kiss (2003). He also introduced Kim and Kandy to R. Kelly, who immediately agreed to work with the duo. Signing a recording contract with DreamWorks Records, JS worked on their debut album, with Isley and Kelly serving as the album’s executive producers, and with an impressive list of other producers contributing as well. The resulting album, Ice Cream, was issued during the summer of 2003, and spawned a hit single, also titled ‘Ice Cream’.
