Love and peace. The program of this album by Joachim Kühn has the merit to be clear. With drummer Eric Schaefer and double bass player Chris Jennings, his trio formed in 2015, the German pianist, now 73, seems to have found a new playground in which the strength of his melodies proves central. Rather labelled as an avant-gardist—or even free—musician, Kühn, who has always rejected conventions throughout his extended career, is of course not sinking here into simplistic and plain music. Quite the contrary. Through rather concise themes, mostly original, aside from pieces from the Doors (The Crystal Ship), Mussorgsky (The old castle from Pictures at an exhibition) and Ornette Coleman (Night Plans), he lightens his improvisations and takes the time to play with space and even with silences. Released in 2016, Beauty & Truth, the first disc from the trio, already let you hear this somewhat uncommon Kühn. With Love & Peace, he found an inner peace which makes his music even more moving. © MD/Qobuz

As pianist Joachim Kühn mentions in the album’s sleeve notes, he gave sixteen concerts with the great saxophonist Ornette Coleman between 1995 and 2000. “Before each concert, Ornette wrote ten new songs, which we would work out and record in his Harmolodic studio in Harlem for a week. Since he wanted me to supply the chords (sounds) for his melodies, I was directly involved in the composition process. After the concert, these pieces were never played again. Now I am the only one who has all the recordings and the sheet music of the 170 pieces. So now, after about twenty years, I have reassembled and recorded them for solo piano. Apart from Lonely Woman, none of these pieces were ever released by Ornette Coleman.” This fascinating collection helped Kühn author a high-class solo album. At 75 years old, he has added some of the free-jazz diktats to his repertoire and is now armed with a rather broad range of shades. He approaches this aptly titled Melodic Ornette Coleman without disrupting the narrative or melodic weave. And because this is Joachim Kühn, the improvisations are anything but plain. In his most melancholic moments, the German pianist still unveils harrowing facets of his musical personality. Superb! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Just judged by its repertoire, this is certainly an impressive solo piano date. Joachim Kühn performs works by François Couperin (a mass from 1690), Bach, Mozart, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman in addition to three of his own originals. Although the mixture of classical and jazz pieces might seem illogical, Kühn's subtle improvising on the classical compositions and his ability to create melodies in his improvising on the jazz tunes give this date an evolution that somehow works. Kühn has always had impressive technique and a healthy musical curiosity. Both serve him well, along with his imagination, on this intriguing and successful outing. ~ Scott Yanow
