"A love letter to the golden age of hip-hop." That's how Mr Jukes, aka Jack Steadman, describes this album which he has made in collaboration with rapper Barney Artist. On The Locket, the two Englishmen deliver a list of tracks where acute, scientific sampling, seventies jazz orchestrations in the style of Cortex or David Axelrod, and vintage boom-bap all intersect. This is an album of stunningly rich aesthetics, with a gem nestling in every corner. The opening track sets the tone, sampling 1972's Where's The Soul Of Man by Mike James Kirkland, very slightly distorted, and overlaid with scratches and tasty overdubs. Mr Jukes was a long-time member of the indie-pop group Bombay Bicycle Club, with whom he explored hip-hop production techniques before they split up in 2017. These experiments yielded deep knowledge of drums, as demonstrated here on tracks like Gratitude or Check The Pulse, in which superb organic bass creates the beating heart itself of The Locket. This is a real labyrinth of concepts, whose highlight is surely the piece Autumn Leaves, featuring London rapper Lex Amor. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

God First is the debut full-length effort from Bombay Bicycle Club's Jack Steadman's solo project, Mr. Jukes. With a unique sound palette of ethereal pads, alternative R&B-infused beats, gang vocals, and eclectic sampling of iconic jazz tracks, the record also features guest performances from neo-soul artist BJ the Chicago Kid and Atlanta-based R&B singer Alexandria. The album includes the singles "Angels/Your Love" and "Tears." © Rob Wacey /TiVo
