British duo Insides made their debut with 1993's Euphoria, a sensual set of ambient pop songs filled with airy guitars, intricately crafted beats, and provocative lyrics about intimate relationships and emotional tension. The distinctive album was praised by critics and remains a favorite of dream pop aficionados, and the duo have sporadically released new recordings, including the 2021 full-length Soft Bonds.
Vocalist/bassist Kirsty Yates and guitarist/programmer Julian Tardo first collaborated as part of the band Earwig, a shoegaze/dream pop group who released four EPs and one full-length (1992's Under My Skin I Am Laughing) before dissolving. Tardo and Yates decided to make hypnotic, deeply emotional music that moved away from distorted guitars and conventional pop song structures. As Insides, they signed to 4AD's Guernica imprint and released the full-length Euphoria in 1993, receiving praise from publications like Melody Maker. Clear Skin, a steadily building minimalist instrumental composed for a gig in London and performed by the duo as their own support band, was released in 1994. The pair left the label and were largely silent for several years, but they signed to the 3rd Stone label and resurfaced with Sweet Tip in 2000. A far cry from their earlier work, the album was a much more upbeat fusion of bossa nova, R&B, and jazz-pop.
Insides disappeared after the album's release, and Tardo devoted much of the next two decades to producing and engineering other bands, including the House of Love and Fear of Men. The duo expressed interest in re-forming, however, and a video for "Ghost Music," the first Insides song in 16 years, appeared in 2016. They remixed tracks by Now, Fujiya & Miyagi, and Memory Drawings, and Beacon Sound reissued Euphoria on vinyl in 2019, as a new generation of listeners began discovering the band's work. Soft Bonds, Insides' fourth release, appeared in 2021, taking the intimate sound of Euphoria in a slightly more abstract direction.
