Inkswel

Inkswel makes vibrant, movement-inducing funk, hip-hop, and house in abundance. Active since 2009, the Adelaide, Australia native has applied a scholarly and natural throwback touch to each form of dance music he has pursued. The producer's large discography boasts 12" and full-length releases bearing the logos of renowned labels such as BBE, Sonar Kollektiv, Compost, and Tokyo Dawn. He's an eager collaborator, having made albums in tandem with Australian production team the Jungle Sessions, London singer Colonel Red, and Bronx MC People Without Shoes. Talib Kweli, Steve Spacek, and Georgia Anne Muldrow account for a single-digit percentage of the artists who have been featured on his tracks. Inkswel issued the fourth volume in his Superfoods series in 2023. A former B-boy, Inkswel (born Jules Habib) sees himself as a DJ first, an attitude that at least partially explains the breadth of his output. From 2009 through 2015, he established himself with well over a dozen 7" and 12" singles with Dopeness Galore and Lumberjacks in Hell, along with sublabels of Rush Hour and Firecracker, among his outlets. Other short-form releases continued to flow forth as he became known equally for full-length projects. The longer efforts started with Superfoods, Vol. 1 in 2015, and continued through the end of the decade with the second and third volumes of Superfoods, Unity 4 Utopia, Secret River (a collaboration with the Jungle Sessions), and The Sound. In 2020 alone, Inkswel teamed respectively with Pugs Atomz (aka Pugslee Atomz), People Without Shoes, and Colonel Red for The Moon, Plasma Platter, and Benjamin's Ghost, Vol. 1. He continued in 2021 with Astral Love, featuring vocal turns from Dwight Trible and Andrew Ashong, and launched another series with the predominantly instrumental Mind Beats, Vol. 1. The producer's 2022 activity included Holders of the Sun, Vol. 1 -- another Colonel Red collaboration -- and Follow the Stars, with featured artists ranging from U.K. jazz group the Nimbus Sextet to modern funkster Moniquea. Inkswel put together Superfoods, Vol. 4 in 2023.
