François Dumont

Pianist François Dumont has established an international solo career following winning prizes in several key piano competitions. He has appeared on a number of recordings as a soloist and as a member of Trio Élégiaque. Dumont's varied repertoire covers more than 50 concertos ranging from Bach and Mozart to Bartók and Messiaen, as well as much chamber and solo music. In 2021, he accompanied Ransom Wilson on the album In the Age of Debussy. Dumont was born on October 19, 1985, in Lyon, France. He began playing piano at age five. He was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique at 14, studying there with Hervé Billaut and Bruno Rigutto. He also studied with Leon Fleisher, Murray Perahia, and Fou Ts'ong, among others, at the Lake Como International Piano Academy and the Lieven Piano Foundation. Success came early, as Dumont began performing with major orchestras across France in 2000 and has since performed across Europe, the Americas, and Japan, including with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others. In 2002, Dumont, with cellist Virginie Constant and violinist Laurent Le Flécher, founded Trio Élégiaque: Philippe Aïche would later replace Le Flécher. Dumont's career was spurned on further by notable achievements in major international competitions in the 2000s and 2010s decades, including a first prize at the Jean-Françaix Competition and a laureate distinction at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2007, and a fifth prize at the Chopin Piano Competition in 2010. Dumont's recording debut came on the Triton label in 2006 with Trio Élégiaque, an album of music by Messiaen and Pascal Dusapin that earned a Diapason d'Or. His solo debut, a recording of Mozart's complete piano sonatas, came in 2009 on Anima Records. In 2011, Dumont earned a nomination at France's Victoires de la musique for instrumental soloist revelation. Along with his continued participation with Trio Élégiaque, Dumont's list of chamber music partners includes violist Tabea Zimmerman, violinist Augustin Dumay, and cellist Henri Demarquett. Dumont's recording catalog continued to grow in the late 2010s and into the 2020s decade. He accompanied flutist Ransom Wilson on the album In the Age of Ravel in 2017. In 2019, he was heard with the Orchestre National de Lyon and conductor Leonard Slatkin on a recording of Ravel's piano concertos. The following year, he issued a recording of Fauré's complete nocturnes, and in 2021, he backed Wilson once more on the album In the Age of Debussy.
