Fariz RM

Fariz Rustam Munaf (January 5, 1959), better known as Fariz RM, is an Indonesian singer-songwriter from Jakarta. Throughout his career, he has been a member of numerous bands, including WOW, Jakarta Rhythm Section, Symphony, Transs, Rollies, and Giant Steps. The son of a Dutch-Betawi piano teacher, he began studying music at the age of 5, first taking up classical piano lessons and then developing a taste for the blues. After finishing in the Top 10 of the Prambors FM Songwriting Contest for teens, he played drums on Chrisye's seminal Badai Pasti Berlalu album in 1977. During these recording sessions, he was given the nickname Fariz RM, which would later become his stage name. In 1979, he made his official debut with the LP Selangkah ke Seberang, but it would be 1980's Sakura that finally thrust him into the spotlight, propelling him to teen idol status. Over the course of the next few years, Fariz RM would become one of the most successful artists in his native country, and hits like "Hasrat dan Cinta" (1982) and "Barcelona" (1988) are considered as some of the best and most influential Indonesian songs of all time. Fenomena, his 21st studio album, appeared in 2012.
