Crushed Beaks

Equally inspired by post-punk, shoegaze, and a shared love of horror films, London trio Crushed Beaks rose in the mid-2010s with a dramatic and powerful sound, riding a series of early singles up to their 2015 debut, Scatter. Vocalist/guitarist Matthew Poile, drummer Alex Morris, and bassist Scott Bowley returned four years later with their sophomore outing, The Other Room. Originally comprised of just Poile and Morris, the duo used this compact lineup to craft a driving yet hazy sound on early singles like 2011's "Close-Ups/Sun Dogs" and 2012's "Grim." Befitting their love of scary movies, Crushed Beaks were invited by composer Fabio Frizzi (who wrote the music for Lucio Fulci's City of the Living Dead and The Beyond) to record their full-length debut in his Rome studio. Bowley joined the band in time to work on the album; called Scatter, it arrived in February 2015 on the Moshi Moshi label. For their follow-up, Crushed Beaks recorded in a converted church in Leeds with producer/engineer Matt Peel (Menace Beach, Eagulls). Released in 2019, The Other Room featured a more expansive, analog-heavy sound.
