The Budapest String Quartet was one of the first such ensembles to have a truly long-standing career. Active from 1917 through 1967, the quartet did not have the frequent turnover that plagued many other groups in the same time period. Although the second violin's chair was occupied by no fewer than six musicians (including Joseph Roisman, who eventually took over as first violinist), the other seats were only ever occupied by two individuals. This consistency went a long way in producing a well-tuned, tightly knit ensemble. Though the repertoire was far-reaching, this two-disc set remastered on the Urania label features the twentieth century works of Grieg, Debussy, Sibelius, and Ravel. Recorded in 1955 and 1957, this release has surprisingly clear sound, robust sound quality that splendidly captures the technical brilliance and cohesiveness of the group. While its slightly more aggressive, edgy approach to the Impressionistic Ravel and Debussy quartets may have fallen out of favor with modern ears, the group's attention to detail and rhythmic vitality is nonetheless admirable. The Grieg quartet, heard here in one of its first successful recordings, is especially brilliant, with the fourth movement Saltarello performed with ease at a seemingly impossible pace. Fans of well-restored historical recordings, as well as devout followers of this exemplary ensemble, will doubtlessly wish to add this set to their collections.
