Asia - Released June 16, 2021 | UNIVERSAL MUSIC LLC

South Korea's flagship K-pop boy band, launched by Big Hit Entertainment in 2013, BTS is a musical phenomenon whose seven members were all born in the 1990s. This formation is one of the most striking symbols of the globalisation of pop music; their hits are carried far and wide over the internet. Among the sugary pop and hip hop rhythms which form the engine of this unstoppable pop bulldozer, they regularly incorporate elements of traditional music from all around the world. Take, for example, Idol (a marriage of Korean pansori art and African rhythms) and Blood Sweat & Tears (with latino colours, and a reggaeton vibe). The lyrics of the latter song also show the band's talent for writing remarkably fine lyrics — in this case they address the issue of temptation with admirable depth. In addition to these punchy songs, this compilation of the Bangtan Boys’ works contains many romantic ballads, with lyrics which can be more bitter than saccharine: Fake Love (a hip hop track with trap sounds mixed in) talks about romantic relationships in which one gradually loses one's identity, while Black Swan speaks of passion for music and the fear that it might dull over time. BTS is the very model of effervescent pop music, with optimistic, concert-friendly choruses. Some stadium-fillers here include DNA (exploring the theme of fate and love at first sight, comparing love to a mathematical formula), or Stay Gold and Not Today, two tracks where the seven members of the band address their many fans, urging them to hold onto their brilliance and courage in spite of the ugliness of the world. © Nicolas Magenham / Qobuz

On their third Japanese release, Face Yourself, Korean boy band BTS bundled tracks from prior releases Wings and Love Yourself: Her alongside a handful of previously unreleased songs. Featuring translated versions of hits like "DNA," "MIC Drop," "Not Today," and "Blood, Sweat, and Tears," Face Yourself also included new additions like "Don't Leave Me," "Crystal Snow," and "Let Go." The album debuted just outside the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 upon release in spring 2018. © Neil Z. Yeung /TiVo
