Since 2015, Brockhampton has shaken the world of rap a little like the Californians of Odd Future had done a few years ago. With their fifth “real” album, this prolific Texan group based in Los Angeles and led by Kevin Abstract have retained their fun, wacky style and their kaleidoscopic, funky take on modern hip hop and R&B. Once again, it is impossible to not be reminded of Outkast throughout Ginger. Abstract recognizes the influence of the cult tandem made up of André 3000 and Big Boi and here Brockhampton have concocted an orgy of sounds, beats and punchlines (often humorous), an alliance of underground R&B and minimalist rap that moves at leisure into gospel, dancehall, rock, pop and electro. An extremely addictive concoction. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Continuing the meteoric rise started in 2017 with their Saturation trilogy, California boy band crew Brockhampton returned with chart-topping fourth effort Iridescence. Less playful and more focused, Iridescence is a declarative moment for the group, delivering on the steadily evolving promise of the Saturation series with thoughtful introspection and their typically genre-blurring sound fusion. Incorporating soulful R&B reflections, raucous hip-hop energy, grime grit, and aggressive electronic production, the set bursts with ideas. Indeed, the album can be overwhelming with its wild creativity and loose construction that has no clear narrative, but keeps heads spinning long enough to distract from the lack of cohesion. Their first without Ameer Vann, Iridescence showcases group members Merlyn (who steals the show on every track he touches), the smooth-voiced bearface, and Joba, who drops a few frenzied scene-stealers himself. Meanwhile, production by Romil Hemnani, Joba, Jabari, and bearface continues to improve, heard in inspired touches like the persistent mosquito-buzz on "New Orleans" and the frantic breakbeat of the confessional "Weight." Elsewhere, "District" stomps as strings swell, "Tape" skitters along a contemplative Radiohead sample, and "Where the Cash At" wobbles its way through the hypnotic haze. On an album of standouts, the latter half is home to many highlights, from the lead single "J'ouvert" to the uplifting "San Marcos," an ode to their roots that rides the mantra "I want more out of life than this" atop the angelic London Gospel Choir and a sweeping orchestra. Very much a product of their time, Brockhampton absorbs what they need from across genres, sharing honest confessions from their varied personal backgrounds (the most striking provided by group leader Kevin Abstract) and reflecting its mixed audience as a voice of their generation. Brockhampton have seized upon this defining moment with Iridescence, a defining peak in their young career. ~ Neil Z. Yeung

Two months after the release of Saturation, self-professed Los Angeles boy band Brockhampton delivered the second installment of their 2017 hip-hop trilogy, Saturation II. Building upon the promise of its predecessor, II is another genre-blurring collection of thrills that's packed with even more wild energy and potential. The flurry of activity produced by this gang of strong personalities manages to be a cohesive and seamless experience, even as it veers from the G-funk cool of "Gummy" to the sweet Frank Ocean-lite "Summer." Fans of Odd Future, N.E.R.D., Vince Staples, Kendrick Lamar, Run the Jewels, and even Gorillaz should find plenty to love on Saturation II. Highlights include "Queer," one of many declarative anthems from the group that tackles frequent topics like sexuality, identity, and youthful defiance; the hypnotic "Chick"; the poignant "Fight," which tackles race and black identity in America; and "Sweet," one of many dizzying team efforts that lures listeners with its unorthodox production before ensnaring them with verses by Matt Champion, Ameer Vann, Kevin Abstract, Dom McLennon, Merlyn Wood, and Joba. Production -- the majority provided by Romil Hemnani, Jabari Manwa, and bearface -- is one of the biggest draws of Saturation II, elevating already catchy tracks like "Jello," "Tokyo," and "Junky" to new levels. Overall, the Saturation trilogy is something to behold -- a fun, thoughtful, and unexpected experience from a group of highly creative young musicians -- with Saturation II its standout installment. ~ Neil Z. The third and final installment of 2017's Saturation series arrived a couple weeks before the end of the year, closing out an impressive run for the hybrid rap outfit Brockhampton. SATURATION III featured more left-field production and samples (including the Nintendo Wii music for propulsive, sax-driven lead single "Boogie") as well as the crew's typically inventive and self-aware rhymes. On "Stains," they even address this issue of quality and quantity when Ashlan Grey quips, "Still talking about the same shit/The one gay, the one selling drugs/The one that's tryna act like Lil Wayne." From the sing-song "Stupid" to the smooth R&B of "Bleach," SATURATION III entertains as much as its two predecessors. Upon release, the album charted at 15 on the Billboard 200, climbing to the five spot on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and capping off Brockhampton's wild year as one of rap's most prolific and exciting groups. ~ Neil Z.
