Broadside

Richmond, Virginia pop-punk band Broadside deliver aggressive, upbeat tunes full of pop hooks and lyrics that reflect everyday angst with humor and sincerity. The group's first album, 2015's Old Bones, reflected their energetic punk roots while 2017's Paradise was more polished and lyrically personal, 2020's Into the Raging Sea took a more serious and dramatic approach, and 2023's Hotel Bleu put greater emphasis on pop and electronic influences. Broadside were formed in 2010 by vocalist Bryant Leary, guitarist Jade Estrella, bassist Josh Glupker, and drummer Andrew Dunton. The band self-released their debut EP, Far from Home, in 2011. Re-recording the set with additional tracks, they released an LP of the same name in 2012 on the Japanese indie label Ice Grill$ Records. In 2013, Bryant Leary and Jade Estrella left Broadside, and vocalist Ollie Baxxter and guitarist Niles Gibbs joined the lineup. The group signed with noted punk label Victory Records, and their first LP for the company, Old Bones, came out in 2015. It included the song "Coffee Talk," which became a digital hit played more than 14 million times on major streaming services. By this time, Broadside had grown into a five-piece, with Baxxter, Gibbs, Glupker, and Dunton joined by guitarist and singer Dorian Enrique Cooke. Later that year, Glupker dropped out of the group and was replaced by bassist Pat Diaz. In 2017, Broadside entered the studio with producer Kyle Black (New Found Glory, All Time Low) for their follow-up, Paradise. The album was a commercial success, rising to number 17 on the Independent Albums chart. For the recording of the album, Colin Schwanke took over on drums, and Jeff Nichols would soon be named the group's official drummer, replacing Andrew Dunton. The album featured two more streaming hits, "I Love You, I Love You, It's Disgusting" and the title cut, which racked up six million and five million plays, respectively. Several years of downtime followed, as the sale of Victory Records led to Broadside looking for a new label, and both Niles Gibbs and Dorian Enrique Cooke parted ways with the group, and Domenic Reid became their sole guitarist. On March 20, 2020, Broadside broke their silence with the release of a new song, "Foolish Believer," and the news that they had signed with SharpTone Records. Their fourth full-length album, Into the Raging Sea, followed in July 2020. Broadside's fourth album, Hotel Bleu, was issued by SharpTone in November 2023. The band described the title as a metaphor for stepping into another state of mind -- like checking into a hotel room and returning to conventional reality the next morning. The album saw the band putting greater emphasis on pop and electronic song structures while maintaining the energy of their early work.
