Beethoven Akademie

Though the Beethoven Academy Orchestra is still relatively young, it has firmly established itself through recordings and performances at major festivals and concert venues. In 2022, the orchestra was heard on the video game soundtrack Marvel: Future Revolution, and it issued the second and third volumes of its Muzyczny Slad Krakowa ("The Musical Trace of Krakow") series, featuring the music of Krzysztof Penderecki and Andrzej Zarycki, respectively. The Beethoven Academy Orchestra ("Orkiestra Akademii Beethovenowskiej") came together in 2003 following the Jünger Künstler Bayreuth Festival. The orchestra was formed by cultural activist Elżbieta Penderecka (née Solecka), wife of the Krzysztof Penderecki, who founded the Ludwig van Beethoven Association in Krakow; the Association is the official promoter of the Beethoven Academy Orchestra. Penderecka and Marcin Klejdysz have shared artistic direction since the group's founding. The orchestra's membership comes from students and recent graduates of Krakow's Academy of Music Krzysztof Penderecki, as well as other nearby, highly esteemed music schools. The Beethoven Academy Orchestra made its debut at the 2005 Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw, which was recorded and issued by the Dux label. That year, the orchestra also issued a recording of music by Wieniawski, Bacewicz, and Penderecki. Since the orchestra's successful debut, it has been invited to perform at festivals and venues in Poland and beyond, including performances as far afield as China. In 2007, the Beethoven Academy Orchestra released a recording of Bartłomiej Gliniak's oratorio Siedem pieśni Marii ("Seven Songs of Mary"), with libretto by Zbigniew Książek on Magic Records. Since 2011, it has been the resident orchestra of Darmstadt, regularly performing with the Darmstadt Concert Choir. In 2013, Jacek Kaspszyk was named principal conductor, and the following year, the Beethoven Academy Orchestra opened the new Krakow Arena with the program "Pixar in Concert." The orchestra teamed with the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015 to perform with the competition's finalists. The Beethoven Academy Orchestra has developed a continuing relationship with composer Ihab Darwish, becoming the first ensemble to record his music for its 2018 release, Waves of My Life. In 2020, the orchestra joined artists from around the world, including the Vox Chamber Choir, for a COVID-19 lockdown streaming concert of Darwish's Hekayat: Symphonic Tales; this performance was also recorded and later released by Universal Music. That feat was duplicated in 2021 for a virtual concert where the performers were synced with 3D imagery to appear on-stage at the Emirates Palace Auditorium. The Beethoven Academy Orchestra had a busy 2022 schedule as it continued its Muzyczny Slad Krakowa ("The Musical Trace of Krakow") series, with albums dedicated to the music of Krzysztof Penderecki (Volume Two) and Andrzej Zarycki (Volume Three); performed the soundtrack for the video game Marvel: Future Revolution; and recorded The Abrahamic Symphony, a collaborative work written by Darwish, David Shire, and John Debney.
