Adam Riis
Tenor Adam Riis has an extensive résumé of performances and recordings in the fields of choral music, lieder, and opera. His work focuses on Baroque music, but he has performed music of all periods, including contemporary works.
Riis was born on September 11, 1978, in Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Music from 2000 to 2005. Among his teachers were tenors Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Josef Protschka and bass-baritone Andreas Schmidt. Riis went on for further study in Scotland with pianist Malcolm Martineau as a Crear Scholar in 2012. By that time, he was already an experienced recording artist. He made his recording debut in 2001 with the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir on the album Buxtehude Vocal Music, Vol. 2, on the Naxos label. In 2008, he joined soprano Signe Asmussen and pianist Christian Westergaard on the Kontrapunkt album Nørholm: Songs of Their Times, and he and Westergaard went on to perform and record frequently together.
Riis' repertory extends from choral music to lieder and opera. He has sung Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine under conductor Paul Hillier, Buxtehude's Membra Jesu, and the Evangelist roles in both Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, and St. John Passion, BWV 245, as well as other Baroque works, but has also appeared in works by Mozart and Haydn, and in music as far forward in time as Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. He and Westergaard have performed song cycles by Schubert, Schumann, and Britten. Riis' theatrical credits include recordings of Carl Nielsen's opera Maskarade with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in 2015, the same composer's much less common incidental music to Moderen, Op. 41 ("The Mother"), in 2020, and Luigi Dallapiccola's Il Prigionero in the same year. In 2023, he appeared on the OUR Recordings label with the vocal group Concert Clemens in Hugo Distler's a cappella Christmas oratorio Die Weihnachtsgeschichte.
