A Pale Horse Named Death

A Pale Horse Named Death is an American heavy metal band based in Brooklyn, New York. They were founded by drummer/vocalist/guitarist Sal Abruscato (formerly of Type O Negative and Life of Agony), with guitarist, producer, and engineer Matt Brown (ex-Seventh Void). Their sound blends doom and brooding goth metal with post-grunge hard rock as evidenced by 2011 debut long-player And Hell Will Follow Me, and 2013's Lay My Soul to Waste. Their lyrics center around themes of nihilism, depression, and self-hatred. Brown left in 2017 and was replaced by guitarist Joe Taylor. When the World Becomes Undone was issued in 2019 and followed in 2021 by Infernum in Terra. Brooklyn, New York's A Pale Horse Named Death was founded in 2011 by once and future Life of Agony drummer and ex-Type O Negative co-founder Sal Abruscato with guitarist, and sound and mixing engineer Matt Brown (ex-Seventh Void). They self-released their debut long-player And Hell Will Follow Me, in an edition of 1,000 copies in June, with assistance from studio guests including guitarist Bobby Hambel (Biohazard), Life of Agony vocalist Keith Caputo, and German-born saxophonist Ulrich Kreiger. Their sound blended the brooding goth metal of Danzig, Biohazard, and H.I.M. with the turgid, post-grunge hard rock of Alice in Chains. Their songs were populated with crushing riffs, and dark melodies, framed in lyrics with themes of nihilism, depressive self-reflection, and the inevitability of death. Critics picked up on their specific brand of haunted heaviness and the album placed at number five on Revolver magazine's list of the year's best albums. They hit the road with Hambel continuing in his role, bassist Eric Morgan, and Danzig drummer Johnny Kelly. Hambel had fulfilled his commitment by the end of the year and was replaced by guitarist Eddie Heedles. The positive critical attention and rave reviews for their incendiary live show earned A Pale Horse Named Death a record deal with SPV/Steamhammer for their sophomore release, 2013's sonically punishing Lay My Soul to Waste. The lineup supported Danzig on a two-month tour, and ultimately played the Wacken Open Air Festival in 2014, receiving thunderous applause. At the end of 2014, Abruscato put the band on hiatus while resuming his role as recording and touring drummer for Life of Agony. Brown left the band as a result. Abruscato resigned from Life of Agony in 2017, and in April 2018, reassembled A Pale Horse Named Death with ex-Lita Ford/Doro guitarist Joe Taylor replacing Brown. In January 2019, they issued their third long-player, When the World Becomes Undone for the SPV imprint Long Branch Records. Immediately after release they embarked on two tours of North America, followed by two tours of Europe with drummer Tommy Spano subbing for an otherwise occupied Kelly. Abruscato spent the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine writing; he claimed to have composed some 87 themes for new songs. Informed by Kelly that he wouldn't be returning to the band given his intensely busy schedule, Abruscato enlisted drummer Chris Hamilton and ex-Altered Vision bassist Oddie McLaughlin as A Pale Horse Named Death's rhythm section in late 2020. In February of 2021, the band announced on social media that they had demo'ed a slew of new material. Their fourth full-length, Infernum in Terra, was released in September by Long Branch Records.
