Once upon a time, Tony Allen…

By Brunhild M. |

Exclusive: the making of his new album, Film Of Life.

As one of the founding fathers of the afrobeat movement, Tony Allen appears to be on earth to endlessly perpetuate this musical genre. At 74 years of age, the ex-drummer of Fela and Africa 70 will release his new solo album on the 20th October 2014 with Jazz Village. Whilst the album undoubtedly preserves his characteristic style, it also dares to adopt a more current sound. Even though the title Film Of Life emphasizes afrobeat values, it also transports the listener to undiscovered musical shores, as in the track Go Back, a superb ballad written with Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). There are elements of jazz, blues and above all a large range of varied and sophisticated rhythms, which turn this record into a fascinating musical achievement, never satisfied with simply employing another revivalist afrobeat sound. Instead, the album attempts to advance this musical genre, whose heyday was back during the 70s, and transport it into the new millennium. The contributors in Film Of Life tell the story of this new musical adventure, a true story of human interest.
