The Flaming Lips: Sunset Youth in Oklahoma

By Stéphane Deschamps |

For their 16th album, Wayne Coyne’s band create a nostalgic and psychedelic trip.

Active now for 35 years, The Flaming Lips are at the forefront of modern psychedelia, having established themselves through the years with their numerous albums. According to Wayne Coyne, the band’s iconic leader, American Head is an ode to his childhood, evoking his home-life and drug fueled youth in Oklahoma.

American Head is less experimental than other Flaming Lips albums. Songwriting is at the heart of the record: poignant blues melodies, emotional and nostalgic, often sad, evoking views of sunset horizons over the great American plains.

The sounds of guitars, vintage keyboards, intricate electronic elements and choirs blend together to form a rich and harmonious record.
