Bent Sørensen

Prominent composer Bent Sørensen writes music in contemporary idioms infused with memories of the past. In the 21st century, his works have increasingly often been programmed by artists of international stature. Sørensen was born in Borup, near Copenhagen, on July 18, 1958. He attended the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music (Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium) in Copenhagen from 1983 to 1987, studying with Ib Nørholm. Sørensen went on for further studies with Ib Nørholm at the Royal Academy of Music (Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium), graduating in 1991. Even during and soon after his student years, Sørensen gained attention for compositions, including Troll-Spild ("Troll-Playing") for solo clarinet in 1982, and four string quartets with descriptive titles: Alman (1984), Adieu (1986), Angels' Music (1988), and Schrie und Melancholie (1994). Sørensen scored a major breakthrough with his violin concerto Sterbende Gärten ("Dying Gardens," 1993), which earned the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1996 after it was recorded by the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Leif Segerstam. Sørensen's music uses traditional tonality but alters it in various ways, for example, by blurring it with microtones or juxtaposing it with atonal material. His opera Under himlen ("Under the Sky") was premiered at Copenhagen's Royal Opera House in 2004. Two Sørensen works appeared on (and were composed for) pianist Leif Ove Andsnes' 2009 release Shadows of Silence, and in the 21st century, Sørensen's music has increasingly often been programmed by artists with international reach. Sørensen's triple concerto L'isola della Città won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award given by the University of Louisville (Kentucky, U.S.) in 2018. His St. Matthew Passion was recorded for the BIS label in 2023 by the Norwegian Soloists' Choir; by that time, some 65 of Sørensen's works had been recorded. Since 2003, Sørensen has been professor of composition at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music.
