Antonín Dvorák's Stabat Mater, Op. 58, truly merits the adjective "tragic"; it was written after the deaths of two of the composer's children in succession, and his grief rolled out in great, Verdian waves. There are several strong recordings on the market, including an earlier one by conductor Jiří Bělohlávek himself, but for the combination of deep feeling, technical mastery from musicians and singers who have spent their lives getting to know the score, and soloists who not only sound beautiful but are seamlessly integrated into the flow, this Decca release may be the king of them all. To what extent was the strength of the performance motivated by Bělohlávek's likely fatal illness (he died days after the album entered the top levels of classical charts in the spring of 2017)? It's hard to say, although he also delivered top-notch performances of Dvorák's Requiem in his last days. The members of the Prague Philharmonic Choir sing their hearts out in the gigantic, shattering opening chorus, which has rarely if ever had such a mixture of the impassioned and the perfectly controlled. Sample the chorus "Virgo virginium praeclara" to hear the magically suspended quality Bělohlávek brings out of the singers in lightly accompanied passages. The soloists, soprano Eri Nakamura, mezzo Elisabeth Kulman, tenor Michael Spyres, and bass Jongmin Park -- an international group in this otherwise almost all-Czech production -- are uniformly strong, but what stands out most is how inevitable their entrances sound. If this turns out to be Bělohlávek's swan song, it is an accomplishment for the ages. Highest possible recommendation.

Veteran historical-performance conductor Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Gent might seem a questionable choice for Antonín Dvorák's lushly Romantic Stabat Mater. And the booklet essay, which assigns the motivation for the work to Dvorák's 1870s employment at a church that favored pure Palestrina choral style, may further lead you to expect (or fear) a radically stripped-down reading of the work. But actually Herreweghe, like other performers who came of age in the historical-performance movement, has been moving into mainstream repertory, and his interpretation here, while not exactly possessing an intense subjectivity, is well within the mainstream. It's a bit deliberate in the tempos and tends to emphasize the work's roots in church music, but it is in no way chilly, and there's an X factor that comes from the performers' clear enthusiasm for the music. Herreweghe employs a choir of about 60 singers, a far cry from the 840 that performed the work in London, and more monumental performances exist. But it would no doubt have been very often performed by forces of this size, and everything is in balance and very smoothly done. Best of all are the quartet of Flemish and German soloists, whose ensemble work is both precise and relaxed, and who add a sort of lilt to many of their melodies. Listen to the work of mezzo soprano Michaela Selinger in the "Inflammatus et accensus movement" (track 9): she is highly expressive without letting the music expand to operatic dimensions. Herreweghe's characteristic orientation comes through in the final fugue, where the parts are all clearly sculpted and plenty of room is made for the brass underpinning. Add in clear, warm sound from Out Here's engineers, working in the Antwerp deSingel concert hall, and you have a worthy entry in the still not large catalog of recordings of the Stabat Mater.

The third volume of this four-part series of trios, quartets and quintets for piano by Dvořák is dedicated to two Piano Quintets and Bagatelles, the Trio Busch welcoming French viola player Miguel da Silva – formerly of the Ysaÿe quartet, between 1984 and 2014 – and also the violinist Maria Milstein, an associate of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium. This ambitious project saw the light of day thanks to the young Busch Trio's arrival as residents at the Music Chapel in September 2014. The First Piano Quintet in A Major, composed in late summer 1872, might have been lost to posterity, as it seems that Dvořák destroyed the manuscript. But a friend made a copy, which allowed the work to survive the composer's hasty judgement. The self-assurance with which the composer deals with the combination of piano and strings is clear; in many places, the score prefigures the famous Second Quintet which closes this album. At this early stage in his career, his influences remain clear, in particular the influence of Schubert. When he looked back on his earlier works, as he would do now and then, Dvořák remembered the quintet of his youth and asked his trusty friend for the copy of the work. As was often the case with him, the reflection on an old work led to the composition of a new one in the same form, in such a way that he wound up creating a new quintet in the space of just six weeks in 1887, when he was approaching the pinnacle of his international fame. Between these two stand-out works for quintet, our musicians have chosen the Bagatelles of 1878, initially written for two violins, cello – not a viola – and harmonium, a household keyboard instrument which was very widespread in those days. Composed at the same time as the first volume of the Slavonic Dances, the Bagatelles share the same national accents. Even though Anne-Sophie Mutter recorded most of the great violin concertos early in her career, working closely with Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, she hadn't recorded the Violin Concerto in A minor of Antonín Dvorák. This 2013 recording with Manfred Honeck and the Berlin Philharmonic fills that gap in her legacy, and this is an exceptionally bright and passionate performance, well worth the wait. Mutter is impeccable in execution and warm in expression, especially in the infectious Finale, and her presence is quite vibrant, thanks to Deutsche Grammophon's expert microphone placement that separates the violin from the orchestra and puts it front and center in the mix. The orchestra is full and robust, though at no point does it overwhelm Mutter, because Honeck carefully grades the dynamics to appropriate levels at each entrance and balances the sections so the ensemble is evenly placed in the background. The rest of the program offers the Romance in F minor and the Mazurek in E minor, both played to the same high standards as the Concerto, and an encore with pianist Ayami Ikeba of the perennial favorite, the Humoresque in G flat major, which Mutter gives a charming lilt. This CD is a pure delight, and Mutter's fans should be sure to add it to their collections.
