It’s thrilling to witness Oakland’s Kehlani progression. She hit the scene as a teenager with "ANTISUMMERLUV" in 2013, solidified her place in R&B playlists with "Gangsta", and left us hopeful for her future from her debut album, SweetSexySavage. Her dulcet voice always sets a mood and this mixtape While We Wait, is no exception. Kehlani’s lyrics have been consistently deep for her age but this time the music catches up in maturity.
The first few tracks point to a moony songwriter but the height of the mixtape appears as a euphonic and danceable trifecta smack-dab in the middle of While We Wait’s nine tracks. "Morning Glory" is a delicious 90s-era TLC jam with a springy beat and cheeky wordplay. "Feels," with its earworm hook, can easily turn into a summer jam sing-a-long ready for repetitive radio play a la Drake's "In My Feelings." "Some Nights Like This" features Ty Dolla $ign who provides the mixtape's only complimentary duet.
Meanwhile, "Nunya" has hit potential but falls short due to Dom Kennedy’s distractingly weak rap. "Butterfly" is the antithesis of a banger, but it also mirrors Kehlani’s musical persona: one part bold and produced, the other muffled and vulnerable like a demo.
Kehlani’s While We Wait has some great ideas. It contains raw elements like a bedroom recording, yet also owns some infectious beats and slick production. She is introspective while progressive with her interpretation of R&B.
