Society’s collective memory is short, but Neneh Cherry has undoubtedly left her mark on an entire generation. She grew up listening to world pop, surrounded by the eclectic mix of influences that flooded the music of the early 1990s. The Swedish singer-songwriter practically wrote the rulebook on combining hazy melodies with dry electronic sounds, and she now embodies the sound of a bygone era for many people. On The Versions, her friends and fellow musicians (including Seinabo Sey, Sia, Jamilia Woods and Honey Dijon) cover her greatest hits. Woman, released in 1996, is one of them, and it’s covered here by American singer Anohni. This hit in particular makes the album’s concept crystal clear: female artists only. This new release gives Neneh’s songs a more poppy sound, providing an exciting modern twist whilst simultaneously remaining faithful to the originals and retaining the time period’s distinctive features (scratches, synthetic layers…). The Versions is a superb tribute to the talented writer of Buffalo Stance (which is covered here by Mapei and Robyn and was released as a single to announce the new album).
