From now almost thirty years, Stone Temple Pilots seems to have been plagued with hardships. This seventh album without a title, like the previous one, is therefore the first without its emblematic singer Scott Weiland, who died of an overdose on December 3, 2015, or without the person who filled in brilliantly with a tour and a promising 5-track EP, High Rise, Chester Bennington, who passed away on July 20, 2017. Despite a huge success as soon as their first album Core, STP garnered the enmity of almost every critic, as they were considered as an opportunistic commercialized version of Pearl Jam, some kind of supermarket grunge. This harsh judgement didn’t improve with the unrivaled Purple, which also sold millions of copies, as Weiland’s escapades were quick to give him the image of an unpleasant person, of which he would never really get rid of, even when he joined the super band Velvet Revolver, at the demand of Slash and Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses). For a time elected in the polls as “the worst grunge band”, STP yet demonstrated again and again that it was more than a poor-man substitute for Pearl Jam, and that it possessed extraordinary musicality and influences. Whatever people say, the DeLeo brothers, the “boss” Robert (on bass) and Dean (guitar), and drummer Eric Kretz managed to create a unique and timeless style.

What will come as a surprise, paradoxically, is that this album is in perfect line with the last one recorded with Weiland in 2010, maybe too much according to some. But, more than ever, STP possesses a musical color that incorporates bluesy rock from the 70s (Never Enough, Six Eight, Good Shoes), as well as bossa (The Art Of Letting Go), 60s pop (Just A Little Lie), with as a bonus some jazzy, punk (Meadow) and folk (Reds & Blues) moods... It would be easier to consider them a classic rock band that never felt the need to get in line with others by converting to electro or trying their hand at hip-hop… Having said that, despite all that, we could expect a noticeable change with the arrival of their new singer, Jeff Gutt, discovered in the TV program X Factor, but it is the complete opposite. On your first listen, you will ask yourself if you’re not suffering from auditory hallucinations. The mimicry is startling. And, when he doesn’t sound like Weiland’s perfect vocal twin, on the two thirds of the album, Gutt gets surprisingly close to Bennington, especially in the nuanced sections (Reds & Blues). Admittedly, it shouldn’t be a particular problem for those who didn’t know—or barely knew—STP, but the fans will need some time to adapt and better enjoy this “new beginning”. © Jean-Pierre Sabouret/Qobuz
