The close attention paid by the Naxos label to the music of Camille Saint-Saëns, much of it from the conductor Marc Soustrot, has yielded many small pleasures, and this release with cellist Gabriel Schwabe and Sweden's Malmö Symphony Orchestra is no exception. Saint-Saëns was marvelously fluent in dealing with the challenges of writing for cello and orchestra, and he could handle anything from the blistering virtuosity of the Cello Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 119 to the most lyrical melodies. Schwabe is competent in both concertos, although you can probably find more individual recordings elsewhere. What you can't find are the lesser-known works. Three of them are arrangements of other works, but the Suite in D minor, Op. 16bis is not, and it's a fascinating piece that contains the whole French neoclassic movement in chrysalis form. The work is meant to be a kind of Bach-ian suite, but ending with a Romance and a Tarantella, it turns into something else along the way. Here Schwabe excels, and the performers find a work that could be added profitably to any program of French music of the early 20th century.

Max Richter, Neo-classical Activist

With the release of his new album Exile, a reflection on exile with the Baltic Sea Orchestra, the iconoclast and prolific pioneer of the neo-classical movement confirms his status as one of the most ideologically committed artists out there. Melding classical and electronic music, physical and emotional worlds, he produces instrumental works of rare evocative power.

Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante, 30 years of freedom

The Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi, notably famous for his rendition of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with his ensemble Europa Galante, is one of the musicians who actively spurns the idea of separating and compartmentalising music. We take a look back at the career of one of the most versatile and open-minded classical musicians of our time, and an essential figure of baroque violin.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
