Ah, Reynaldo... what a terrible injustice that posterity has placed him into such difficult-to-escape pigeonholes: a salon musician; Proust's boyfriend (yes, and?); director of the Paris Opera (he certainly was - but he never took advantage of the position to have his many and superb lyrical works performed there)., We forget his important symphonic repertoire, and his many works of chamber music, for example, which include this Piano Quartet, written in 1946, one year before his death. It still plainly has something of the Belle Époque about it, and some inheritances from Fauré and Messager – it is clear that Hahn is having a laugh at atonal, serialist and avant-garde vogues — but with an elegance! On the piano, the fulcrum of the whole album, we have James Baillieu, whose career was met with particular — and beautiful — success in the field of chamber music and accompaniment for vocalists. After all, he was the winner of the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, the international song competition Das Lied, and the Kathleen Ferrier and Richard Tauber competitions. The album continues with a lovely handful of melodies, including the tender À Chloris, adapted for strings (violin, viola, or cello as desired) and piano. We finish with the magnificent Quintet for piano and strings from 1921, a masterpiece which owes a certain debt to Franck, but with a melodic flair and an apparently-natural harmony that's actually full of subversive complexity, both of which characteristics are entirely Hahn's own. Nothing but beauty, and beautifully played. We await the next instalments with impatience! © SM/Qobuz
