All recordings by collegiate choirs these days seem to require a provenance, so Paul Brough shall pull together a few facts and figurations to explain what they are trying to do here. They have not tried to give us a lesson in history, liturgy, theology or musicology. They are not attempting to tell us exactly how this music and its accompanying liturgy was performed, though we can be sure that there was yards of antique lace and cloth of gold worn. They have not attempted a liturgical reconstruction – though, they present the music in liturgical order to help accentuate its variety – or a dogmatic representation of the sounds of the scores. They are bringing you the powerful truth of Easter, celebrated in sound by two enthusiastic and devoted groups, in a fusion of what we might have heard in late eighteenth-century Salzburg or Vienna in Austria, and what we are welcome to come and hear in early twenty-first-century Oxford in England. With its choir and chapel services Keble College aims to make itself accessible and approachable, it was founded in 1870 to enable undergraduates from more modest backgrounds to attend The University. © CRD Records

In your panoramas...
Scriabin's Flamboyant Raptures

Somewhat overshadowed today by his compatriots Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin is nonetheless a key figure in Russian music. At the beginning of the 20th century, the composer and virtuoso pianist broke away from the Romantic legacy to offer a unique and innovative musical language which no one would follow. His work, deeply influenced by mystical philosophy and synaesthesia, would undergo a dazzling evolution in barely two decades, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 43.

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.

Max Richter, Neo-classical Activist

With the release of his new album Exile, a reflection on exile with the Baltic Sea Orchestra, the iconoclast and prolific pioneer of the neo-classical movement confirms his status as one of the most ideologically committed artists out there. Melding classical and electronic music, physical and emotional worlds, he produces instrumental works of rare evocative power.
