From the White Stripes to his time in the solo wilderness, Jack White has been foretelling the doom of a clapped-out rock'n'roll. But a decade on from "Seven Nation Army", the genius with a thousand projects has a new prophecy: rock is coming back. And while we await its return, here's a look back at the White phenomenon.
The title may sound like a nebulous marketing ploy, and yet for about twenty years, Americana had been summarizing this blend of rock, country, blues and rhythm ‘n’ blues. And like in every big family, you’ll find almost every type of person: the rebellious daughter, the cultivated uncle, the agitated father, the driven cousin, etc.
The quartet from Sheffield has left their Northern lands to hijack the charts, thanks to their incisive riffs, oiled quiffs and lustful hip moves. After the White Stripes, the Libertines and the Strokes, the ex-teens have put rock music on life support and made everybody take notice, imposing themselves, album after album, like the swiss army knife of rock groups, as comfortable in soulful lament as in the airiest of pops.
